ST Telemedia unveils AI-ready facility in Kolkata with ₹450 cr investment

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), a provider of data centre colocation services based in Singapore, on Tuesday, launched a new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-ready data centre campus in Kolkata. The facility, located in the city’s IT hub, New Town, spans 5.59 acres with an investment of ₹450 crore. It is designed to cater to the growing demands of AI computing with advanced cooling systems, high-density rack configurations, and a modular, scalable structure.
The data centre has received the TIA-942 Rated-3 Design certification. TIA-942 Rated-3 Design certification is a globally recognised standard for data centre infrastructure, developed by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). It ensures that a data centre meets high levels of availability, redundancy, and reliability.
With a total IT power capacity of 10 MW, the first building will offer between 5-6 MW. The site incorporates a power architecture for consistent power availability and dedicated feeder access.

Bimal Khandelwal, CEO of STT GDC India, said that the new facility aims to foster AI innovation in Eastern India. “The Kolkata campus will support startups developing local language AI models and enterprises deploying large-scale AI solutions. The high-performance computing capabilities and low-latency connectivity are expected to facilitate digital transformation across multiple sectors,” he said.
Expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2025, the Kolkata facility expands STT GDC India's presence to 30 data centres across 10 cities, with a total IT load capacity of 390 MW. Its location in New Town’s Silicon Valley positions it as a key hub for AI development, catering to enterprises, hyperscale cloud providers, and government organisations.
The investment aligns with India’s focus on AI and the increasing demand for AI-ready infrastructure. The facility is set to support a range of AI-driven applications, including natural language processing in regional languages and computer vision technologies in manufacturing and healthcare.

In December last year, Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services firm, announced a ₹426 crore investment in a new development centre in Kolkata. Spanning 320,000 square feet, the facility will accommodate 4,000 employees, focusing on cloud computing, AI, and digital technologies. Twenty-eight companies have reportedly started work and 40 other companies have already taken land at the state's new IT hub in New Town. Out of these, 11 are setting up data centres.
