Indian IT services firm Coforge, a global digital services company, has partnered with HFS Research to release a report highlighting the challenges enterprises face in scaling Generative AI (GenAI) beyond pilot projects. The report, titled Break Free from GenAI Pilot Purgatory, is based on insights from senior executives at large enterprises that have successfully implemented AI solutions. It identifies key obstacles preventing companies from moving beyond experimental phases and provides a structured approach for scaling AI adoption.

The findings suggest that many enterprises struggle to transition from testing AI capabilities to real-world implementation. Over 60% of organisations remain stuck in pilot programmes without achieving tangible business impact. The report stresses that success in AI adoption requires companies to align their initiatives with strategic goals, invest in infrastructure and data readiness, establish measurable success criteria, and foster a culture of AI adoption across teams. Without these steps, businesses risk falling behind competitors already leveraging AI for efficiency, innovation, and revenue growth.

HFS Research CEO Phil Fersht noted that companies treating AI as an experiment rather than a fundamental business shift are at risk of obsolescence. The study outlines seven common challenges preventing AI scaling, including inadequate infrastructure, data limitations, lack of innovation momentum, and difficulties in integrating AI solutions into broader business strategies.

Coforge Executive Vice President Vikrant Karnik highlighted that many organisations seek guidance on moving beyond pilot stages. The report presents a four-step framework for AI adoption, covering opportunity identification, proof-of-value prototyping, precision scaling, and continuous improvement. This structured approach is designed to help businesses move AI projects from isolated experiments to enterprise-wide solutions.

Meanwhile, Coforge has expanded its partnership with ServiceNow by launching a Generative AI Centre of Excellence in Greater Noida. The initiative integrates Coforge’s AI framework, Quasar, with ServiceNow AI Agents to help businesses develop and scale AI-driven solutions. The centre will focus on industries such as financial services, insurance, healthcare, and travel, offering AI-powered solutions for payment processing, fraud detection, dispute management, and digital operations.
