Infosys, India's second-largest IT services firm, on Tuesday, announced a partnership with Lufthansa Group and Lufthansa Systems to drive digital transformation in aviation. This collaboration includes setting up a Global Capability Center (GCC) in Bengaluru aimed at enhancing software development and product support.

The GCC will use Infosys Topaz, an AI-first platform, to create advanced aviation IT products and data-driven solutions that focus on areas such as finance, flight navigation, network design, and aircraft operations. The goal is to improve aviation safety, efficiency, and competitiveness in an environment of fluctuating demand.

Lufthansa Systems, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Group, helps airlines deploy advanced technology. It serves over 350 global customers with a comprehensive portfolio that supports all airline operations, from the flight deck to cabin management and ground services.

Thomas Rückert, CIO of Lufthansa Group, said that the aviation industry is facing unprecedented challenges, from volatile fuel prices and increasing operational complexities to global political uncertainties. “In this context, our collaboration with Infosys reflects our shared commitment to excellence in aviation by addressing these challenges and shaping the future of air travel,” he said, adding that Infosys’ expertise in digitalisation and innovation will be crucial for optimizing operations and enhancing passenger experiences, ultimately driving sustainable growth.

Ashiss Kumar Dash, EVP and Global Head – Services, Utilities, Resources, Energy, and Sustainability, Infosys, said that during the long-term deal, Infosys expects its Infosys Topaz and industry cloud solutions like Infosys Cobalt Airline Cloud to optimise operations of Lufthansa Group and enhance user experience, paving the way for a new era of sustainable and efficient air travel.

Recently, Infosys launched the Cobalt Airline Cloud, a first-of-its-kind industry offering to drive operational efficiency and contribute to the aviation industry's sustainability initiatives.

Infosys has established GCCs for other clients in the past, including a joint aerospace engineering and digital innovation centre with Rolls-Royce in Bengaluru two years ago and a development centre for Panasonic Avionics in 2021, which has since moved in-house.

This new tech hub for Lufthansa follows Delta Airlines' establishment of a tech centre in Bengaluru in 2019, and American Airlines is also set to open a centre in Hyderabad. Air India has set up tech centers in locations such as Gurgaon and Kochi to develop software solutions internally, as part of a broader initiative to enhance passenger experiences and fleet management.
