AWS plans $8.3 billion investment in cloud infra in Maharashtra by 2030

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced an $8.3 billion investment in cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra, part of its expansion into the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region and a broader $12.7 billion commitment to India by 2030 to meet rising demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Maharashtra government and AWS formalised the agreement on January 22 by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that this partnership will enhance technological infrastructure, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth. AWS CEO Matt Garman noted that the investment is expected to contribute over $15 billion to India’s GDP and support more than 81,000 full-time jobs in the local data centre supply chain by 2030.

AWS has already invested $3.7 billion in Maharashtra from 2016 to 2022, launching its first cloud infrastructure region in India—the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region—in 2016 and its second in Hyderabad in 2022. These regions provide customers in India and globally with resilient, low-latency options for data storage within India.

The new investment is projected to add $15.3 billion to India’s GDP by 2030, benefiting sectors like telecommunications, construction, electricity generation, facilities maintenance, and data centre operations. David Zapolsky, Amazon's senior vice president of global public policy, emphasized that this collaboration supports the state’s digital goals and democratizes access to emerging technologies.

Additionally, the investment will support an estimated average of over 81,300 full-time equivalent jobs in local businesses linked to the data centre supply chain. AWS’s infrastructure serves enterprises including Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Lombard, as well as startups like Healthify and public-sector organizations such as Coal India Limited.

AWS is also promoting innovation through its AWS Partner Network (APN), collaborating with firms like TCS, PwC, and Deloitte to help Indian businesses develop and scale digital solutions. Since 2017, AWS has trained over 5.9 million individuals in cloud skills through initiatives like the AWS Skills to Jobs Tech Alliance and STEM education programs in Maharashtra, along with supporting skills training for women and job readiness programs for youth.

Earlier this month, Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella on his visit to India announced plans to invest $3 billion in India over the next two years for cloud and AI infrastructure, including new data centres, and to train 10 million people in AI by 2030 as part of its ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA skilling initiative.
