Nokia has announced a five-year extension to its existing agreement with Microsoft Azure, focusing on the supply of datacenter routers and switches. The collaboration will enhance the scalability, reliability, and global reach of Azure's datacenters, solidifying Nokia's position as a strategic supplier for Microsoft's cloud infrastructure in over 30 countries.

As part of the expanded deal, Nokia will deploy its advanced 7250 IXR-10e platform to provide multi-terabit-scale interconnectivity within Microsoft’s datacenters. These solutions will support Azure's transition from 100GE to 400GE connectivity in existing facilities while also being implemented in new locations. The deployment of the 7250 IXR-10e platform is set to begin in February, enabling Microsoft to manage escalating data traffic demands efficiently.

The partnership also deepens Nokia’s role in advancing the open-source SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud) ecosystem. This includes innovations such as chassis-based support for high-capacity network operations within datacenters. Nokia will continue supplying its custom-designed management top-of-rack switches extensively used in Azure's network architecture.

Vach Kompella, Senior Vice President and General Manager of IP Networks at Nokia, emphasized the importance of the extended collaboration. “This new agreement expands the product scope, geographical reach, and time commitment of our partnership. It underscores Nokia’s focus and investment in addressing the needs of tier-one hyperscaler companies,” he said.

This announcement comes shortly after Nokia revealed plans to deploy nearly 3,300 new sites by March 2025 for Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) to expand its 4G network across nine regions in India. The initiative includes significant upgrades to over 42,000 technology sites, aiming to enhance VIL’s network speed, capacity, and reach.
