Energy management company Smart Joules appoints new CPTO
Smart Joules, an energy management company, announced on Monday the appointment of Gaurav Kejriwal as its new Chief of Product and Technology Officer (CPTO). Kejriwal, a technology leader known for scaling enterprise products, will drive the company’s innovation in automation, IoT, and artificial intelligence.
Specifically, Kejriwal will lead energy optimization through system automation across sectors such as hospitals, hotels, IT parks, malls, and the pharmaceutical industry. This initiative aims to create a sustainable and energy-efficient future for businesses on a global scale.
Before joining Smart Joules, Kejriwal worked at GreyOrange Pvt. Ltd, a warehouse automation company specializing in robotics and software solutions. As Director and Entrepreneur in Residence, he contributed to launching and accelerating robotic technologies worldwide, achieving significant revenue milestones, and guiding cross-functional teams in developing products and market strategies.
Most recently, he started an intrapreneurial venture with a first-of-its-kind Robotic AMR Technology called RMS, replacing traditional conveyors and scaling it to approximately $15 million in revenue across multiple geographies.
Kejriwal, who holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics & Communication from BIT Mesra, is driven by the desire to create efficient products and technologies at Smart Joules that address the world's energy challenges, particularly in emerging markets with vast potential for growth and efficiency improvements. "Here, I see an opportunity to make a transformative impact on product innovation, technology advancement, and global energy consumption," he says. For example, he will lead significant initiatives to strengthen intelligent automation in building management systems to reduce costs and maximize value.
Gaurav’s appointment comes at a crucial time as Smart Joules is expanding its product portfolio and market reach.
Arjun Gupta, CEO of Smart Joules, stated that the company aims to reduce 29 million tons of carbon emissions, achieving 0.1% of the global decarbonization target in the next decade. This will be accomplished by expanding cooling as a service and implementing intelligent automation in developing countries.
The goal is to make building management systems as user-friendly as Facebook and Google, ensuring continuous optimization of energy-consuming systems like cooling, said Gupta, adding that Kejriwal’s technology and business acumen will play a key role in driving this growth by simplifying energy savings for clients.
Founded in 2014, Smart Joules claims to have developed the industry's first cooling-as-a-service solution designed to prioritize energy efficiency. The company claims to have saved 23 crore kWh of energy since its inception, translating to INR 181 crore in energy costs and 1.6 lakh tonnes in carbon emissions.
In February, Smart Joules secured a debt funding of $8 million (about Rs 66 crore) from the Denmark government’s Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU) under a green strategic partnership between India and Denmark. The startup said it plans to use the fresh funds to execute its pipeline of cooling-as-a-service partnerships with healthcare and hospitality chains.
