Indian companies are increasingly appointing chief digital and information officers (CDIOs) to lead digital transformation efforts, often evolving the chief information officer (CIO) role into the CDIO role. A recent study reveals a 33% increase in the hiring and creation of CDIO positions in the last six months, driven by a growing emphasis on technology for operational efficiency.

According to WalkWater Talent Advisors, which analysed over 400 CIOs and CDIOs globally including India, this surge is partly due to the changing responsibilities of CIOs. The CDIO role merges traditional CIO duties with new Chief Digital Officer responsibilities, engaging technology throughout the entire business rather than focusing solely on existing IT infrastructure.

Experts believe that CDIOs signify a strategic shift towards leveraging technology for business outcomes, fueled by the need for digital innovation and advancements in cloud computing, software-as-a-service (SaaS), and AI. For instance, Godrej & Boyce appointed Vijay Balakrishnan as CDIO in April to drive technology-driven transformation, while Sanjay Mishra joined Jindal Stainless in May to oversee major digitalisation projects.

Sectoral adoption of CDIOs is most common in industrial (40%) and pharma (36%) and consumer sectors (35%), although the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) (26%) and technology (17%) sectors have been slower to adopt this leadership position.

Despite the growth, gender diversity is lacking, with women occupying only 17% of CDIO roles compared to 22% of CIOs. The report highlights that 80% of CDIOs have an engineering background, predominantly holding master’s degrees, with a preference for MBAs (67%), indicating a need for both technical and business expertise. Additionally, 37% have experience in business or management consulting, emphasizing a blend of technical knowledge and a solid understanding of business operations.

Global experience is also vital; over half of CDIOs have had international exposure, reflecting the interconnected nature of digital transformation. The market for CDIO roles is active, with 64% changing positions in the last three years, driven by high demand.

Rahul Shah, Co-Founder and Director of WalkWater Talent Advisors, notes that CDIOs are essential as organisations face rapid technological changes, acting as visionaries who enhance customer experiences and bridge the gap between technology and business goals.

Market research firm Gartner recognises the increasing importance of CDIOs in digital transformations, anticipating rising demand for skilled professionals in this role. McKinsey & Co. shows a close relationship between CIOs and CDOs and believes that companies that still rely on two different roles must work together to align technology and business transformation for organisational success.
