IT and networking company Cisco has launched its Webex Calling feature in India in partnership with Tata Communications. To be sure, Webex Calling is a solution from Cisco for enterprise-grade calling through cloud. According to the announcement made on Wednesday, Webex Calling will be integrated with Tata Communications Cloud-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). It will be routed via Tata Communications’ Mumbai data centre.

While Webex Calling was available in India previously too through on-premise infrastructure, with Tata Communications, this service will be offered through the latter’s managed cloud voice services called the GlobalRapide platform.

The companies in a joint statement said that Webex Calling by Tata Communications will enable enterprises to scale their communication infrastructure without upfront investments in server hardware while complying with applicable laws in India. The users will have access to collaboration tools in Webex Suite which includes Meetings, Messaging, and Webinars, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered innovations such as audio intelligence, and a complete range of devices, among others.

“Webex Calling simplifies businesses' cloud transition through flexible migration choices, top-notch reliability, and AI-driven collaboration tools and devices,” said Daisy Chittilapilly, President, Cisco India & SAARC. Notably, Webex India received a telecom license from the Indian government in 2022 for providing enterprise-grade national and international telecom connectivity. With this, Webex became the first over-the-top (OTT) player to get a telecom license. That said, Cisco's preferred mode of Go-To market is through partnerships as seen with Webex Calling by Tata Communications, said Chittilapilly during media interactions.

To be sure, Cisco and Tata Communications have been partners for over two decades. Webex Calling is available in 51 other countries in addition to India. Arijit Bonnerjee, Sr Vice President and Head — India, Tata Communications told TechCircle that the company is one of the primary partners for Webex Calling in other regions as well.
