AWS announces Bedrock’s general availablility for Indian customers
Cloud provider AWS today announced the general availability of its managed services suite Bedrock in the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region (also called BOM). To be sure, AWS Bedrock, which was introduced last year, offers a range of foundational models using which customers can build and scale their generative AI applications.
Its general availability globally was announced in September 2023, however, its availability in the BOM region will support customers across the country, including public sector organisations and companies in regulated industries, to innovate and to have choices on where they can run and store applications, the company said in a statement. It is expected to lower latency needs, crucial for generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications for faster processing and response times. Apart from BOM, India also has AWS Asia Pacific Hyderabad region.
“The availability of Amazon Bedrock in India will further spur innovation that large enterprises, startups, independent software vendors, and public sector organisations are building in India, and complement their efforts to upskill their talent in generative AI,” said Shalini Kapoor, Chief Technologist — APJ Public Sector, Director — AWS India and South Asia.
In India, organisations such as Max Life, TCS, Shellkode, HealthifyMe, among others are using generative AI offerings from the AWS for use cases such as productivity gains, user experience, and smoother work operations. AWS Bedrock offers access to Customers can access the latest generation of models from including Amazon, Cohere, Anthropic, Meta , and Mistral.
In 2023, AWS announced plans to invest $12.7 billion in India by 2030 into local cloud infrastructure bringing total investment in India to ₹1,36,500 crore ($16.4 billion) by 2030. This investment will contribute $23.3 billion to India’s GDP by 2030, and support approximately 131,700 full-time jobs annually at local businesses.
