German media company for business and financial news – Handelsblatt Media Group – has selected IT services firm Infosys as its artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation partner. Under this collaboration, Infosys will work with Handelsblatt Research Institute (HRI) in the first year of the partnership. HRI, which is the independent economic research institute under the group will leverage Infosys’ AI set of services Topaz to make complex reports on global economic and financial topics more accessible and consumable for the public.

Infosys Topaz platform will help in customisations such as chat functionality, text translation and transformation, text-to-speech, and automatic data updates, among other key features. Handelsblatt hopes to move to the ‘next level of digital storytelling’ powered by AI.

“By leveraging our Generative AI capabilities, through Infosys Topaz, Handelsblatt Media group will redefine the storytelling experience for complex reports in journalism and making them more accessible to the public. The media industry is the digital fabric of our society, and Infosys aims to constantly deliver value and opportunity for all industry stakeholders,” said Ashiss Kumar Dash, EVP & Global Head – Sustainability, Services, Utilities, Resources and Energy, Infosys.

In separate but related news, publishers and media groups have raised alarm about Tech companies training their AI models on their proprietary information. In December 2023, The New York Times sued ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement through ‘over the unauthorized use of published work to train artificial intelligence technologies’. OpenAI reverted by saying that NYT’s arguments are ‘without merit’.

To be sure, OpenAI has already partnered with publishers like The Associated Press, Axel Springer, Prisa Media, and Le Monde. A December NYT report found that iPhone maker Apple is also negotiating with major news and publishing firms to use their material to develop generative AI systems.
