After Ayodhya, Mumbai’s Dharavi, and Holy City of Mecca, geospatial tech company Genesys has been awarded the contract to implement a 3D Digital Twin covering 160 square kilometers in Varanasi. Genesys will undertake this project in collaboration with Varanasi Smart City Limited (VSCL) at a contract value of ₹7 crore.

Genesys  will leverage its New India Map stack to create an 3D replica of Varanasi, encompassing its physical features, processes, and relationships. The Urban Spatial 3D Digital Twin aims to address issues such as traffic congestion, logistics, mobility, waste management, urban flooding, and tourism promotion.

A primary objective of this initiative is to enhance governance through a geo-enabled Decision Support System (DSS), fostering collaboration and communication among government departments. The project's analytical mapping capabilities enable responsive coordination and intelligent decision-making within departments.

The Urban Spatial 3D Digital Twin will help alleviate issues such as traffic congestion, logistics, mobility, solid waste management, urban flooding, and promotion of tourism, the company said in a press release. Techniques such as aerial LiDAR mapping, terrestrial mobile LiDAR, and 360-degree street panoramic imagery will be utilised. To be sure, the company, having completed street imaging for around 1,500 towns and cities, also partners with Google Maps.

Sajid Malik, CMD of Genesys International Corporation said, "Digital Twin Varanasi is a momentous occasion for us. Our 3D city data will be integrated into various development schemes and projects." The simulation capabilities offered by the Digital Twin will aid urban planning efforts, allowing predictive visualisation of infrastructure projects.
