upGrad leverages AI for multilingual learning materials for Indian learners
Education company upGrad is employing artificial intelligence (AI) to translate its popular learning materials, including bootcamps and certifications, into various Indian languages. Recognising that over 40% of upGrad's learners in India come from Tier 2 cities and beyond, where local languages dominate, the company aims to make education more accessible by translating content into Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Bengali in the initial phase.
To ensure an effective learning experience, upGrad will integrate a combination of pedagogy and human interventions. The company plans to deploy local language-speaking counsellors and buddies who will guide learners through their educational journey. This strategic approach aligns with upGrad's commitment to enhancing accessibility and aims to cater to a diverse demographic.
President of upGrad, Asheesh Sharma, emphasized the company's mission to improve employability figures in the country, where only 7% to 8% of graduates are currently considered employable. Sharma stated, “Our objective is to substantially elevate this figure by providing millions with some initial support or springboard to get closer to their career aspirations.”
Sharma also mentioned the company's continued investment in AI. While AI has been utilised in operations, upGrad is now integrating it further into the curriculum and teaching methods. This strategic move is in line with the company’s growth and transformative goals for the fiscal year 2025.
The initial focus of this multilingual initiative, termed Phase 1, will cover domains such as engineering, data science, AI, cloud computing, DevOps, user interface/user experience (UI/UX), and agile project management. Phase 2 will expand into critical areas like cybersecurity, blockchain, product management, business analysis, and ITIL, as well as foreign languages like Spanish and Chinese.
With a substantial enrollment of over five lakh learners, upGrad's courses have witnessed noteworthy demand in key cities, including Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Odisha, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata. To effectively address inquiries and foster cognitive development among the youth, the company will leverage an in-house tech tool, aligning with the government’s initiative to connect culturally with the nation’s diverse population. This move is poised to transform the educational landscape, making quality education more accessible and inclusive across the country.
