US-based manufacturer of cooling solutions, Vertiv, inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune on Tuesday. This facility was established to meet the increasing demand for data centres and supporting infrastructure solutions in India.

This is Vertiv's third manufacturing facility in India, with the other two located in Ambernath and Pune. The new facility will directly employ over 500 people, according to the company.

Subhasis Majumdar, the managing director of Vertiv India, stated that the new plant, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, will enable them to provide more thermal management capacity, improve lead times, and enhance their ability to deliver customised, large, and complex solutions.

The facility will manufacture cooling solutions ranging from 200W to 2MW+, including adiabatic free cooling chillers, large custom air handling units (AHU), thermal wall units, a new range of large direct expansion (DX) units, packaged DX and free cooling with economiser units, a new range of in-row cooling units, wall mount units, and rack cooling systems, the company said.

Vertiv also has a global research and development (R&D) center in Pune, India located in Viman Nagar. The facility is equipped with advanced lab facilities to support Vertiv product development and next generation Vertiv products. The company currently employs over 2,000 people across the country and has a nationwide presence. The majority of the market served by the company consists of data centres.

"With the increasing global digitalisation and rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the data center industry is experiencing growth and a demand for more capacity, including for data centre thermal and power infrastructure," Vertiv CEO Giordano (Gio) Albertazzi said in a statement.

He added that India's emergence as a data centre hub in the Asia Pacific region was a key factor in establishing the third manufacturing facility in the country, emphasizing their commitment to nurturing India's data center ecosystem while addressing global demand.

According to a JLL report published in April, India's data centre industry is expected to expand by 678 MW in the next three years, reaching a capacity of 1,400 MW by 2025, making it the 13th largest market globally. Additionally, India Briefing has reported that 45 new data centres, covering a total area of 13 million square feet with a capacity of 1,015 MW, are scheduled for development by 2025. This is projected to drive the industry to a size of $9.27 billion by 2027.
