Jiny Thattil promoted as BYJU’S CTO following Anil Goel's exit
Edtech company BYJU'S has promoted Jiny Thattil to the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) following the departure of Anil Goel, who served as CTO for three years. Thattil, previously the Senior Vice President of Engineering at Byju's, will now oversee the organization's technological initiatives.
Goel, a former executive at Amazon, was reportedly one of the highest-paid CTOs in the country. His departure comes as part of a broader restructuring at Byju's, which has seen the elimination of thousands of jobs and consolidation of some of the business.
Thattil joined BYJU'S in 2020 and initially led the engineering team before taking on a senior role at Epic, a startup acquired by Byju's. According to Byju’s, with a career spanning over 25 years in the software industry, Thattil brings experience in building and scaling engineering teams, delivering business and customer outcomes, and driving innovation across multiple product lines and platforms. Prior to joining BYJU'S, he had worked at Happay, Amazon, and InMobi.
“We are delighted to promote Jiny Thattil as the CTO of BYJU’S. His extensive experience and leadership skills make him the ideal candidate for this crucial role as we continue to rebuild for greater efficiency and sustainability,” Arjun Mohan, India CEO of BYJU'S said in a statement.
He also extended his heartfelt gratitude to Anil Goel, the outgoing CTO, for his “exemplary work and dedication to driving technological innovation at BYJU’S”.
The company said that this transition is part of an ongoing restructuring under Mohan's leadership, who became India CEO in mid-September. An Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode alum, Mohan was part of BYJU'S founding team. He previously served as Chief Business Officer before becoming CEO of upGrad in 2020.
The restructuring has resulted in the resignation of several high-ranking executives, including Chief Business Officer Prathyusha Agarwal, CEO of WhiteHat Jr Ananya Tripathi, and the head of international business Cherian Thomas. Most recently, Chief Financial Officer Ajay Goel left the company, and Nitin Golani, President - Finance, took on additional responsibility as India CFO.
BYJU'S has also reportedly closed around 20 offices across the country and consolidated its workforce into five regional offices. This has led to the elimination of overlapping roles and approximately 3,500 individuals leaving the organization. In May, the company had over 24,000 employees, but with ongoing job cuts, the total count is expected to reduce to around 20,000.
