Samiran Gupta steps down as X Corp's India & South Asia policy head
Head of Policy for India and South Asia at social media platform X, Samiran Gupta, has stepped down from his role, according to sources cited by Reuters. This development comes when the company is involved in a legal battle with New Delhi concerning the removal of content.
Gupta's responsibilities included handling important content-related policy matters, representing Twitter's stance on new policy changes, and providing support to the sales team in India, as per his LinkedIn profile.
During his tenure at X, Gupta also collaborated with various Indian government departments such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), CERT-In, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and the Ministry of Home Affairs on issues related to online content and security.
His profile also mentions his involvement in Twitter's leadership transition following Elon Musk's acquisition of X-Corp.
Gupta had joined X in February 2022, just eight months before Musk's $44 billion acquisition of Twitter Inc.
As per the report, while there are approximately 15 X employees in roles related to compliance and engineering in India, Gupta was the primary executive responsible for engaging with the government and political parties.
Currently, the company is appealing an Indian court's ruling that it did not comply with government directives to remove specific content, contending that such actions could potentially empower New Delhi to censor more content and broaden the scope of censorship.
Since Musk's takeover and the rebranding of Twitter as X-Corp, the company has experienced significant changes. Shortly after taking charge, Musk replaced Twitter Chief Executive Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde.
