Information technology infrastructure and services company NTT Ltd has invested $300 million in its new hyperscale data centre campus in Chennai. The Chennai 2 campus has two data centre buildings with a total capacity of 34.8 MW. The first of the two facilities with a 17.4 MW IT load capacity is already operational.

Alongside the data centre campus, NTT also announced its subsea cable system in the city called MIST, with a carrying capacity of 200 TBPS of data. It is NTT Group’s first cable system that will provide connectivity to and from India, connecting countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The MIST subsea cable is constructed by a consortium comprising NTT Communications India Network Service and Orient Link Pte. Ltd.

NTT’s data centres capacity spans 20 countries and regions, with a total capacity of 1,900 MW. In India alone, with the Chennai 2 Data Centre Campus, the company’s data centre footprint has grown to 16 facilities with over 205 MW of IT power. 

The data centre campus in Chennai will leverage global connectivity to offer data center capacity in Southeast Asia markets like Singapore where capacity is short supply. The company said in a statement that it wants to position Chennai as a disaster recovery site for enterprises with primary IT infrastructure in other Indian cities.
