“Our aim is to demystify AI for learners through Infosys Springboard and help them make a conscious choice in building their careers. We firmly believe that AI proficiency will give young aspirants and professionals a competitive advantage in a dynamic and demanding job market,” Thirumala Arohi, senior vice president and head - education, training and assessment at Infosys, said.

Infosys’ announcement comes at a time when there has been a spurt in the demand for AI professionals globally and in India, which has doubled in the past 3-5 years. According to a report by Microsoft released on June 1, close to 90% of Indian employers feel employees they hire will need new skills in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) to stay ahead of the game.

“There is a need for all employees to build AI aptitude which will include new core competencies such as prompt engineering in their day-to-day,” said the report. However, as per the report, about 78% of Indian workers said they do not currently possess the right capabilities.

The skills gap, according to the study is impacting innovation, as more than 3 in 4 Indian leaders said that a lack of innovation or breakthrough ideas in their teams is a concern – and this is where many are looking for certifications for upskilling and reskilling from reputed companies and institutions.

In March, a report by staffing firm TeamLease Digital further revealed that there are currently 45,000 job openings in AI in India, across sectors such as healthcare, education, banking, manufacturing, and retail, with annual salaries for freshers ranging from 10 to 14 lakh. The report said that data scientists and machine learning (ML) engineers are among the most sought-after careers in the field, also stressed on the importance of upskilling and investing in AI skills, as the industry continues to grow.
