OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly considering the development of an AI model marketplace, as reported by The Information. This potential marketplace, often referred to as an AI 'app store,' would enable companies to purchase and sell customized bots designed to meet their specific requirements.

According to sources familiar with OpenAI's internal discussions, the company is actively exploring the concept of creating a marketplace where customers can trade their tailor-made AI models that cater to specific business needs. Collaborating with organisations to offer AI-powered tools based on large language models is not entirely new, as OpenAI has already received significant funding from Microsoft, which has also introduced its own AI products and provided a sneak peek into offerings like Copilot.

During a recent meeting with developers in London, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed his plans for an innovative marketplace. Vlad Eidelman, CTO of FiscalNote, stated that "as far as we know with OpenAI's road map, they're interested" in opening an app store.

However, an OpenAI spokesperson disclosed that they are not actively working on creating a marketplace for advanced chatbots. Their main objective is to enhance the usefulness of these advanced chatbots in different industries. By utilising current data, businesses can leverage these chatbots to quickly provide answers to industry-specific questions, according to the report.

An article in The Wall Street Journal from June 13 states that OpenAI has partnered with companies like Salesforce and DuckDuckGo, suggesting that OpenAI and Microsoft sometimes have overlapping target customers. In response to increasing competition in the generative AI field, OpenAI has recently improved its text-generating models and reduced its prices.

Creating its own marketplace could significantly expand OpenAI's customer base and give them an advantage over rival AI companies like Anthropic and Cohere.
