Meta introduces Broadcast Channel feature for Instagram users
The Instagram Broadcast Channel feature is now available in India. This feature allows creators to connect with their followers on a larger scale.
Broadcast Channels function similarly to direct messages (DM) on the platform, with the key difference being that not all users can send messages or posts within the channel. This is similar to the Broadcast Channels on popular messaging apps such as Telegram and WhatsApp.
According to the company, Broadcast channels are a messaging tool that allows creators to share text, video, and photo updates with all of their followers in a one-to-many format.
The Meta-owned photo-sharing platform has also introduced a new feature called Collaborators in India. Creators can now invite other creators or fans to join their broadcast channel.
In Broadcast Channels the creators have a range of interactive features, including the option to conduct polls, share behind-the-scenes moments, and send voice notes, as well as text, images, and videos, with their followers. Alternatively, users have the option to simply respond to a message or social media post through the use of emojis or by participating in a poll. This is similar to what Telegram and WhatsApp have to offer.
Upon gaining access to broadcast channels, creators can send their first message from their Instagram inbox, prompting their followers to receive a one-time notification to join the channel. The broadcast channel is accessible to all viewers, however, only those who become followers will receive notifications for any future updates.
In February, Instagram started testing broadcast channels to help creators "deepen their connections with their followers”.
Followers can leave or mute broadcast channels at any time. They can also control their notifications from creators by going to the creator's profile, tapping the bell icon, and selecting “broadcast channel”.
The default notification setting for specific users will be set to "some," with the option to adjust to either "all" or "none". Followers will only receive an invitation notification for a broadcast channel, and will not receive any further notifications unless they opt to add the channel to their inbox. Upon adding a channel to their inbox, it will be displayed alongside other message threads, and notifications will be activated and operate similarly to conventional chats.
As per the company, “Anyone can discover the broadcast channel and view the content, but only followers who join the channel will receive notifications whenever there are updates.”
According to Meta, the social media platform is also set to introduce new features for its creators. These features include question prompts and a dedicated channels tab in the inbox, which will allow users to easily access joined channels and discover new ones.
