Indian Navy partners with QNu Labs to leverage quantum-based techniques for secure communication

Indian Navy will now deploy large-scale quantum-based encryption systems to enhance data and communication security. Indian Navy has chosen quantum cybersecurity provider QNu Labs as the partner to procure and deploy quantum key distribution-based systems. QKD is a secure communication technique using principles of quantum mechanics.

The QNu Labs will be providing QKD-based Hub & Spokes systems to the Indian Navy, the company said in a statement today. The procurement order for the same was signed by Indian Navy in May. As per QNu Labs, this deal will secure the communications network against potential threats and position Indian Navy as a ‘pioneer in the field of quantum secure communication within the country’.

The company develops and delivers QKD, trusted nodes, and quantum random number generator (QRNS) systems.

Indian Navy is betting on quantum technologies for secure communication. In April, the Weapons and Electronics Systems Engineering Establishment (WESEE), the research and development establishment of the Indian Navy signed a memorandum of understanding for a period of five years with  Raman Research Institute (under the Department of Science and Technology) to develop secure maritime communications using quantum technologies.

Under this agreement, RRI’s Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab will develop QKD techniques for securing free space communications.
