Vedanta Limited on Tuesday announced the appointment of Terry Daly as Advisor for its semiconductor business. Daly will be responsible for providing strategic counsel and inputs as the conglomerate looks at setting up a state-of-the-art semiconductor fab unit and semiconductor assembling and testing unit in India.

In February last year, industrialist Anil Agarwal-led mining company Vedanta group and Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) had entered into a pact to form a joint venture (JV) company - Vedanta-Foxconn Semiconductors Limited — to manufacture semiconductors in India. In September 2023, the companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government to invest ₹1,54,000 crore to set up India's first semiconductor plant in Gujarat, and said that the facility would create one lakh job opportunities.

Daly joined Vedanta from his post as an independent consultant in the microelectronics industry. His career assignments include GlobalFoundries, where he was Senior Vice President, holding positions as head of strategy and corporate development, chief of staff, and head of corporate program management. He was instrumental in establishing a strategic alliance on advanced technology with Samsung and in the acquisition of IBM’s microelectronics business.

Prior to that, Daly spent 26 years at IBM, the majority in its semiconductor division, where he held executive roles in business management, finance, manufacturing operations, program management, and strategy. Before joining IBM, he spent five years as an officer in the United States Army.

Daly is a graduate with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a master's degree in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.

Vedanta has been on a hiring spree appointing global leaders from the semiconductor industry. In February this year, the company appointed industry veteran David Reed as CEO who was the executive vice president and general manager of global operations at Dutch chip company NXP Semiconductors. In April 2023, it welcomed Lawrence (Wong Chee Yoong) as Senior Director – Human Resources, who joined Vedanta from Lighthouse Global Resources, where he was working as the global strategic director for semiconductor and technology practices.
