After a break of three years (since 2022 was hybrid), the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is back in action in almost entirely a physical format. The four-day tech showcase, from January 5 to 8, will host over 3,100 exhibitors from across 173 nations. The curtain-raiser event for the year’s technologies often showcase key themes that become trends for the year, or at least reinforce an emerging trend from the previous year. This year would be no less — we expect plenty of talk around personal robotics, showcases around the metaverse, the next generation of automobile technologies, and emerging healthcare technologies, too. On this note, here’s looking at the top technology trends that we expect to see at CES 2023.

More Matter hardware

In a recent interview with Mint, Tobin Richardson, chief executive of the cross-industry internet of things (IoT) alliance, Matter, said that even the might of Big Tech is now coming to realise the limitations of closed IoT ecosystems. This led to the emergence of Matter — the first potentially real cross-compatible IoT device ecosystem. At CES, expect to see more smart home products that can work with each other, no matter which company builds it or what software platform it runs on.

New health-tech

CES’ official brief about the approaching event highlighted digital health technologies as a key theme at the event. Reports have previously predicted this as well, rising off the back of the landmark Roe v Wade regulation on women’s abortion freedom being overturned. As a result, health tech being showcased at CES 2023 could include a focus on women’s health, advanced digital therapeutics including wearable tech, and more. Exhibitors could include the likes of Abbott and Omron, among others.

Autonomous cars and EVs

The evolution of automotive technologies is one of the most obvious themes that have been predicted for 2023, and not just CES. Expect a keynote from BMW showcasing its future vision for its cars, as well as showcases from other companies as well. Exhibitors include Stellantis, General Motors and autonomous mobility specialists, Mobileye, among others. Themes in this sector will include advanced autonomy, shared mobility in smart cities, and new benchmarks to improve driving ranges in electric mobility.

New TV tech

Of course, no CES is complete without TV showcases, so Samsung and LG have already showcased their latest salvos. Samsung showcased the Odyssey Neo G9 8K ultrawide, and a 5K ViewFinity S9 display to rival Apple’s exorbitant studio monitor. LG, too, wasn’t left behind, showcasing the Z3, G3 and C3 OLED ‘evo’ TVs with new generation AI processors, and a revision to image processors that apparently make the OLED display tech brighter. New capabilities include enhanced image upscaling, and support for simulating 9.1.2 virtual surround sound as well.

Web3 and metaverse

Finally, showcases of web3 and the metaverse are evident, especially after the tumultuous year that web3 has had. Expect showcases of new wearable metaverse tech from the likes of the once much-hyped Magic Leap, and also a new ‘light’ wearable headset from HTC that will apparently rival Meta’s Quest Pro line of headsets. Coindesk is also hosting a session to talk about the future of web3, while Microsoft is also expected to showcase its technologies. More details to follow soon!
