Twitter users can now post videos, images, GIFs in a single tweet
Twitter has relaxed its rules on media content to allow users to upload multiple media files including photos, videos, and GIFs in a single Twitter post, also known as tweets. The microblogging platform announced on Thursday that users can add up to four videos, images, and/or GIFs in a single tweet.
After selecting the media files, users can also rearrange the layout while composing the tweet.
This new capability will be initially available on iOS and Android, however, tweets with multiple media files can be viewed on all platforms including desktop web browsers.
Before this, Twitter users were allowed to post one media file type in a single tweet.
“Mixing different types of visual content in a single Tweet allows creators to express themselves beyond 280 characters and gives them more ways to tell their story,” Twitter said in a blog post.
The relaxing of media rules is part of Twitter’s strategy to move away from being a text-heavy social media platform to one that allows users to express themselves using audio as well as video content with the same ease as on other social networks.
Last year, the company added a new section called Spaces for Clubhouse-like live audio interactions. Last month, it announced two new video-related updates — immersive media viewer and video carousel.
The immersive media player allows users to expand videos to full screen with a single click, while the video carousel will allow users to see more video posts alongside other tweets in the explore tab.
According to Twitter, videos shared on the microblogging platform receive billions of combined views every year.
Though Twitter is one of the most influential social media platforms, it has only 436 million monthly active users as of January 2022 as per Statista, as compared to the likes of Facebook (2.91 billion), Instagram (1.47 billion), and TikTok (1 billion), which have given more freedom to users when it comes to sharing media content, particularly videos.
