Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio concluded its annual general meeting (AGM) today, revealing plans for its upcoming 5G network, and more. The company, which has investments from large global companies, including Facebook and Google, has been working on multiple products and services for over a year now. Here’s everything that Jio announced in the 2022 edition of its AGM, today.

Jio standalone 5G

Ambani confirmed that Jio’s 5G rollout will begin from Diwali this year, in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. The company expects to increase coverage to more cities in 2023, and the Jio network will be a standalone 5G network.

JioMart-WhatsApp integration

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta and Mukesh Ambani’s Jio have completed the integration of messaging platform WhatsApp and JioMart, which has been in the works for over a year now. The two companies had announced a pilot phase for the project back in December last year, and Zuckerberg announced the full-rollout shortly after Jio’s annual general meeting (AGM), today.

Low-cost 5G phone for India

While Meta is fueling Jio’s retail ambitions, the company is working with its other Big Tech investor, Google, to develop a low-cost 5G phone for India. The two companies have also worked on the JioPhone Next before this, and the low-cost 5G phone too has been said to be in the works for a while now.

Qualcomm Ventures, the investment arm of chipset maker Qualcomm, is also an investor in Jio. Cristiano Amon, the President and CEO of Qualcomm, also made an appearance at the AGM to talk about pushing 5G adoption.
