Windows users will soon be able to change default browsers with a single click
In a new update, Microsoft has now enabled Windows 10 users to change their default browser in a straightforward single-click process, making the task much simpler.
Microsoft has been criticised time and again for forcing users to use its Edge browser. But a Twitter user (@Leopeva64) noted the change some days ago and shared a GIF describing the update pertaining to Windows 10.
Till March 2022, users were able to choose their default browser in Windows 11 only by clicking on to the settings panel. To recall, Windows 11 first debuted with a new method of setting a default browser. Instead of picking a default for all browser-related tasks, Microsoft made it a manual process for users to pick their default browser. It was an obvious move to keep users on Microsoft Edge, the default browser on Windows 11, as much as possible.
But now, Google Chrome is adding support for changing the default browser on Windows 10 without even leaving the browser. In fact, the latest version of Google Chrome for Windows has added support for automatically switching your default browser with a single click.
Leopeva64 tweeted, “We’ve not been able to replicate the same behaviour on our end, which hints that this functionality is limited to the pop-up banner and not Chrome’s “Default Browser” option in the Settings menu.”
It’s important to note that this feature is only live in Chrome Dev right now that’s built for the open web, requiring version 106.0.5231.2. Currently, the stable version of Google Chrome is on version 104.0.5112.81. But as per the company, this feature should arrive for everyone in just a matter of weeks.
Already, rival browsers like Firefox and Opera support the same kind of one-click, in-browser default app switching.
