In Brief: Facebook-Jio to seek CCI nod; NPCI may not cap market share of UPI apps
The recent Facebook-Reliance Jio deal has to be scrutinised by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), as they will control a huge amount of consumer data, The Economic Times reported, citing industry experts and government officials. The combined reach of Facebook and WhatsApp with telecom major Jio may give the firms an unfair advantage over their competitors, the report said. Anshuman Thakur, head of strategy for Reliance Jio, will soon approach the CCI for approval, it said. Company officials told the financial daily that the CCI approval is the only regulatory clearance the company needs.

NPCI may roll back plan to cap market share for third-party UPI apps
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) may roll back its plan to put a cap of 33% on the market share of third-party unified payment interface (UPI) apps, Entrackr reported, citing sources. While the exact reason for the move is unknown, it could be the result of lobbying by third party app providers (TPAPs) opposing the cap, the sources told the publication. The proposal to cap UPI market share was mainly to curb the concentration of volume of transactions from a few limited firms such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Amazon Pay, the report added.
