Cloud platform Akamai opens its second-largest global facility in Bengaluru

US-based content delivery and cloud services provider Akamai Technologies Inc. has opened a 250,000-square-foot facility at Embassy Golf Links Business Park in Bengaluru and it is expected to house over 2,000 employees.

The company said its second-largest facility across the world will house Akamai’s network operations centre as well as security and broadcast command centres to serve customers in the region and across the globe. 

“Akamai has had a presence in Bengaluru for more than a decade. We’re proud of how our local team delivers meaningful innovation for the company globally and for customers locally, helping Indian organisations harness the full power of the internet,” said Dr Tom Leighton, chief executive at Akamai.

Prasad Mandava, managing director, India, said the facility represents Akamai’s “continued commitment to our colleagues in the country who, for over a decade, have built products and solutions that have helped businesses thrive in the internet age”. 

Last month, Akamai, in a joint study with the Ponemon Institute, said that over the past 12 months, web application attacks cost companies an average of $2.4 million and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks led to a loss of $1.1 million.

According to the study, revenue losses stemming from customer-facing services being unavailable due to the attacks
averaged $435,222 over the past year. 

The study also revealed that companies experienced an average of approximately four DoS attacks over the past year. Following an attack, the average amount of downtime was 7.45 hours, and the time taken to mitigate the effects of one DoS attack was more than one hour (60.32 minutes).
