Uber fires Amit Singhal for not disclosing sexual harassment charge at Google

US-based Uber Technologies Inc. has asked senior vice president of engineering Amit Singhal to resign from the company for reportedly failing to disclose a sexual harassment allegation at his previous organisation Google.

Uber's co-founder and chief executive Travis Kalanick asked Singhal to leave the firm, an Uber India executive told VCCircle on the condition of anonymity.

An Uber India spokesperson did not respond to an email query seeking clarification. Another email sent to Singhal seeking comment did not elicit a reply at the time of filing this report.

The development was first reported on Monday by US-based online technology publication Recode.

"Harassment is unacceptable in any setting. I certainly want everyone to know that I do not condone and have not committed such behaviour. In my 20-year career, I have never been accused of anything like this before and the decision to leave Google was my own," Singhal told Recode.

The development comes at a time when Uber has come under the scanner after a former female engineer wrote a blog about human resources at the company looking the other way after she reported her manager's unwanted sexual advances.

Singhal, an IIIT-Roorkee alumnus, had joined Uber in January this year. Prior to Uber, Singhal was Google's head of search. He left the company in February last year after spending a decade-and-a-half at the tech giant.
