Gamification ed-tech startup EdSix Brain Lab secures angel funding from Sprout Angels

Skills_AngelsDigital education startup EdSix Brain Lab Pvt Ltd, which runs a brains skills gaming suite, has raised an angel funding round led by Sprout Angels LLP, the company said in a statement.

The firm did not share the funding amount nor revealed the names of the other investors.

EdSix, which was founded in 2013 as an incubatee of IIM Ahmedabad's Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), will use the money to expand services in the B2C segment and strengthen its technology platform, it said.

The startup offers Skill Angels – a gamified skill assessment and enhancement platform for K-12 students. The platform has been developed by a team of educational experts, clinical psychologists and developmental paediatricians. It aims to strengthen students' core cognitive skills essential for critical thinking, learning agility, increased attention span and so on.

Vipul Patel, associate vice president at CIIE said, "Skill Angels is strategically poised for immense growth and has the potential to be at the top of the education game arena. The current round of angel investment will play a pivotal role in moving Skill Angels into the next orbit and fuelling next phase of their growth."

The company offers a suite of over 500 games with a audio-visual online experience that lends itself to self-paced learning, controlled gaming and supports skill development.

Since inception, the company has catered to the needs of over 15,000 students, said Saravan Sundaramoorthy, founder and CEO, EdSix Brain Lab.

Abhaya Kumar, Sprout Angels' chief advisor, estimates that the market size for game-based learning industry globally is around $2-3 billion this year. It is projected to touch $8-9 billion by 2017, he said.

"We see huge potential for educational games in India with a market size of around a $1-1.5 billion in the next couple of years. We find the product developed by EdSix has global potential," said Kumar.

The company is likely to lock horns with edutech startup Convegenius, online assessment platform Mettl, child development venture Mind Edutainment and others.
