Freecharge COO Deap Ubhi joins Amazon Web Services in San Francisco
Deap Ubhi, the chief operating officer of Sequoia-backed online mobile recharge platform FreeCharge.in and founder of Burrp.com, a local search site, has joined Amazon US. According to his LinkedIn profile, Ubhi has been with the company since January this year, and is responsible for working with startups, accelerators and incubators to evangelise the company's cloud computing service Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The news was first reported by MediaNama, which stated that he will continue to remain a shareholder and advisor (in terms of global expansion) to FreeCharge.
Ubhi had been appointed as the COO of Freecharge back in May 2012. He was directly managing product, engineering, design, marketing, customer service and HR at the company. An alumnus of the University of California, Ubhi previously worked with Alpine Investors as a vice-president, before starting Burrp in 2006 in partnership with Anand Jain. At Burrp, he was responsible for fundraising, legal, administrative, marketing and business development. In 2009, the company was acquired by media firm Infomedia18 Ltd.
Post-acquisition, Ubhi remained a part of the company till April 2010, and then shifted to the US. While he was there, Ubhi also ran Hopscout (part of Luxe Commerce Inc), a site focused on childhood nostalgia. He had earlier also founded a social commerce startup called Jaypore.
