Samsung's Galaxy Note 510 & Win available in India for Rs 30,900 & Rs 18,260; should you buy them?

After unveiling the tablet in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February this year, Samsung has now launched Galaxy Note 510 (earlier Note 8.0) in the Indian market. The tablet runs on the Android Jelly Bean operating system and is available at the company's e-store for Rs 30,900.

Here is a quick look at the specifications.

Galaxy Note 510

The tablet features an 8 inch WXGA TFT touchscreen display (1280×800 pixel resolution) and 189 pixels per inch (ppi) pixel density. It runs on the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system and is powered by a 1.6 GHz quad-core A9 processor. The device comes with 2 GB RAM that essentially means seamless use of multiple apps simultaneously. Users can opt for 16 GB or 32 GB internal memory, which can be further expanded up to 64 GB with the help of a microSD card.

Galaxy Note 510 has a 5 megapixel autofocus rear camera that can record full high definition (HD) videos (1080p) at 30 frames per second and a 1.3 MP front-facing camera for video calling. On the connectivity front, the device has Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi (with Wi-Fi Direct), and 3G, a microSD slot and a microUSB port. The smartphone measures 210.8mm x 135.9mm x 7.95mm and weighs 338 gm. Samsung has provided a 4,600 mAh battery in the device, which should ensure decent battery life. It also has Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS).

The tablet also comes with a multi-window option to split the screen and access a number of live applications. Plus, there is an S Pen that enables users to control the physical menu/back buttons on the device. You can read the detailed specifications of the device here.

Although not many companies have launched an 8 inch tablet (most of the times, it is either 7 inch or 10 inch), some of the 7 inch and 10 inch ones come in the same price segment. The new device will face competition from the likes of ASUS Transformer Prime (Rs 29,173), Lenovo Ideapad K1 Tablet (Rs 30,249), Acer Iconia Tab A501 (Rs 31,547) and Apple's 16 GB iPad Mini with Wi-Fi + cellular (Rs 29,900). And we don't think that any 7 inch tablet list is complete without the mention of Google's Nexus 7 tablet, priced at Rs 18,999 for the 32 GB version.

As to whether it is worth the buy or not, we think you can give this one a skip and go for the Galaxy S4 smartphone. After all, no one needs a powerhouse tablet when you can have a powerhouse smartphone.

Galaxy Win

The company has introduced Galaxy Win in India. It is a mid-price range smartphone unveiled last month and costs Rs 18,260.

This one sports a 4.7 inch WVGA TFT LCD touchscreen display (480×800 pixel resolution) and runs on the Android 4.1 OS with Samsung's TouchWiz UI. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, has 1 GB RAM and comes with 8 GB of internal memory. There is also a microSD slot to expand the device memory by 32 GB.

The smartphone has a 5 megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED Flash that can record HD videos (720p) at 15 fps and a front-facing VGA camera for video calling. On the connectivity front, the device has Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi and 3G, as well as a microSD card slot. It has a 2,000 mAh battery and comes with GPS (with A-GPS support). Galaxy Win measures 133.3mm x 70.7mm x 9.65mm and weighs 144 gm.

All in all, it is an above average device, but considering its price, first-time users looking for a quad-core processor experience (and dual-SIM support) can give this one a try.
