Firefox OS smartphones for developers go on sale, already out of stock

Geeksphone Inc, a Spanish tech company has rolled out the first smartphones (Keon and Peak) running on the Firefox operating system (OS). The devices, which are exclusively made for developers, had gone on sale a couple of days back, but are already out of stock, according to the company's shopping webpage.

Firefox OS is web-based mobile phone platform built by Mozilla, a non-profit organisation for free web. The OS supports HTML5 apps, which means an app developed for the platform can be used cross platforms (unlike 'native apps' that are platform specific for Android, iOS, etc).

Both the devices have all the hardware features developers need to start developing software for Firefox OS. Here is a look at the specifications of the device.

The Keon has 3.5 inch multi-touch screen and it runs on Qualcomm 1 GHz processor. On the camera front, it has a 3 megapixel rare camera and it is priced at $119. In comparison to Keon, Peak has advanced features like 4.3 inch multi-touch screen and runs on Qualcomm 1.2 GHz processor. On the camera front, it has 8 megapixel rare camera and 2 MP front facing camera for video calling and it is priced at $194.

Both the phones are powered by 512 MB RAM and come with 4 GB internal memory. On the connectivity front, both have wifi, 3G, 2G, bluetooth 2.1, FM, GPS, microUSB and microSD card slots. While Keon has 1580 mAh battery, the company provides a better 1800 mAh battery in Peak.

The announcement of Firefox OS was made in February this year, which also said that Firefox OS for mobile devices will be released in July with service providers like Spain's Telefonica, China Unicom and America Movil.

Firefox OS would come in a market which is polarised between iOS and Android.
