Wicked Leak launches Quad-core phablet Wammy Passion Y for Rs 17,000

Mumbai-based startup Wicked Leak Inc., which entered the low-priced tablet market in India with a 7 inch tablet called Wammy 7 in June last year, has been launching a number of gadgets since. The latest addition to its line of products is Wammy Passion Y, a 5 inch Android phablet competitively priced at Rs 16,999. Here is a look at the specifications.

The device runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system (upgradable to Android 4.2) and can be pre-booked on the company's site (shipping starts from March 15, 2013). The phablet has a 5 inch high definition capacitive touchscreen display (1280x720 pixel resolution) and is powered by a 1.2 GHz MTK6589 cortex A7 Quad-core processor. It has 1 GB RAM and 4 GB internal memory that can be expanded to 32 GB with a microSD card.

On the camera front, it sports an 8 mega pixel rear camera with flash that can also record videos and a 5 MP front-facing camera for video calling. As for connectivity, the phablet has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and it also comes with a microSD port (for internal memory expansion). Additionally, the device has GPS, an FM radio and dual-SIM capability (both CDMA and GSM).

The device measures 120.55 mm x 66.8 mm × 1.9 mm and weighs 147 gm. The company has provided a 2,800 mAh battery, which should ensure decent battery life. According to the site, it will also offer an additional battery and a screen protector with the phablet.

While it is not a revolutionary phablet, we have to say it is a decent enough device (at least on paper, real-time usage could be different). Although Wammy Passion Y won't compete with the big daddies like Samsung Galaxy Note II (Rs 35,500) and the HTC Butterfly (Rs 45,990), it can definitely pose a threat to Samsung's mid-priced phablet Galaxy Grand Duos (Rs 21,500) – if you are willing to take a chance with a relatively unknown brand.

As for Indian companies, it will compete with homegrown handset manufacturer Micromax's Canvas HD A116, which was launched for Rs 17,499, but saw a price cut and is now available for Rs 13,990. Other competitors will include Spice Mi-530 (Rs 13,999), Karbonn A30 (Rs 11, 500) and Byond Phablet PIII (Rs 12,599), among others.
