Former Reliance Entertainment (Digital) CEO Rohit Sharma Launching E-com Start-up Focused On Kids
Rohit Sharma, chief executive officer of Reliance Entertainment (Digital), has put in his papers and is now launching his own e-commerce venture which will focus on kids. Although he will remain on the advisory board of Reliance Entertainment, his e-commerce venture is all set to go live within the next 2-4 weeks, reliable sources told Techcircle.in.
Details of the start-up and the average age group of the young target audience are not available as of now but given his background, the venture could be related to kids' entertainment. Sharma has already managed to bring together a small team, although it cannot be immediately ascertained whether he is in partnership with others or if it is his solo venture. When contacted for more information, Sharma declined to comment.
Sharma has over 12 years of experience in the Internet/digital entertainment industry. He joined Reliance Entertainment way back in March 2006 after leaving his position as the CEO of Zapak.com (a causal gaming portal). Thereafter, he built the entire team and business from scratch. Till recently, he was working as the CEO (Digital Business) of Reliance Entertainment and also headed all other digital businesses including Big Adda (an e-commerce venture with alternate retailing), BIGFlix.com (a video-on-demand service) and Jump Games (a publisher and developer of online and mobile entertainment).
A Physics graduate from Delhi University, Sharma completed his MBA from Lancaster University. Prior to joining Reliance, he worked with Times Internet Ltd for six years and before that, worked with Cyber Media India Ltd for a span of two years.
Although we could not confirm the exact nature of his new e-commerce venture, there are already a slew of portals focusing on baby/kids' products. Some of the key ventures in this space include Babyoye.com, established in May 2010 under Mumbai-based Nest Childcare Services Pvt Ltd; Firstcry.com, launched in November 2010 by Pune-based BrainBees Solutions Pvt Ltd; HushBabies.com, launched in May 2010 by Lapis Marketing Services Pvt Ltd; A2ZBaby, a brand owned and operated by Claymould Interactive Pvt Ltd and Hoopos.com, founded in January 2011 and headquartered in Bangalore.
In addition, there is also Homeshop18.com, owned by the media house Network18 Group, which added baby and kids' product categories to its online shop mid last year.
