McAfee Founder Srivats Sampath Raises $1.5M For Latest Venture Grokr

US-based serial entrepreneur of Indian origin Srivats Sampath has raised $1.5 million for his latest venture Grokr Inc, that is yet to launch operations. According to a SEC filing, Grokr raised the money from six unnamed investors through a mix of equity, debt besides convertible securities around two weeks ago.

Grokr's website doesn't say exactly what will it be involved in but reads 'Unleashing The Cognitive Web For A Post-PC World'. The message appears to be displayed on what looks like a Tablet so we can only guess what the firm will be about.

It adds that it will launch in January 2012, so we would get to know in the next few days or at best weeks.

If you are wondering Sampath who, here's a lowdown. He is the founder and former CEO of McAfee.com, one of the largest subscription-based SaaS security services firm for consumers and small-to-medium sized businesses that was acquired by Intel for $7.68 billion in 2010. Prior to that he was with Netscape and also worked with Central Point Software and Intel.

Sampath, who received his B.Sc. in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from Madras University, started his career by co- founding Mecon which was subsequently acquired by GE.

Most recently he was the co-founder, president and CEO at Mercora Inc and is currently also the executive-in-residence US Venture Partners at the firm's Menlo Park office. According to his profile here Sampath holds a number of patents in the areas of information security, delivery of software-as-a-service and contextual Internet advertising.
