Here is a number that would be of interest to all those in online coupon businesses.
Snapdeal.com today claimed in a press release that it sold 30,000 deals on a single day. It's another matter that a majority of the deals were mobile recharge coupons. Nevertheless, there were 30,000 transactions done on April 25, when Snapdeal offered a 50 per cent discount on a Rs 100 prepaid recharge card for mobile connections of all major telcos.
Kunal Bahl, CEO, Snapdeal.com, refused to give the break up of categories. But the release mentions: "At one point of time during the day, Snapdeal.com was selling 100 deals in one single minute." Snapdeal claims it has four million registered users.
Techcircle.in checked with other online retailers on how they are doing on various categories. E-commerce site Infibeam.com informed that it sold more than 580 copies of Jeffery Archer's new release "Only Time will Tell" in a single day at Rs 89 (which is approximately a 73 per cent discount of the listed price). A deal on pen drives was also one of the best selling products on Infibeam.com. The company said it sold 1,200 pen drives (2GB and 4GB storage) on March 11 and March 31 as well at an average discount of 50 per cent of the listed price. Infibeam doesnt retail mobile recharge coupons as of now.
When contacted, Harish Bahl, Founder and CEO of Smile Interactive Technologies Group, which runs two deal sites Fashionandyou.com and Dealsandyou.com, refused to give the number of transactions but he said they have done deals worth Rs 1 crore on a single day between the two sites.
Dealsandyou.com said the company's highest daily sales was when it sold 428 units of Blackberry handsets on December 23, 2010. The handsets were given at a discount of up to 70 per cent. Handset models that were on offer were the BlackBerry Storm 9530, BlackBerry Pearl 8110 and the BlackBerry Curve 8320.
On eBay.in's 'Daily Deals' site, which features gadgets, lifestyle products and technology accessories, a deal on a box of Ferrero Chocolates for Valentine's day sold around 1000 quantities in a single day. The company also sold 1500 eBay branded T-shirts in March.
On its other property 'Deals of the week' a pen drive deal offered in September 2010 notched up sales of 700 units in a day.
